Blue Genes

On a vacation I read a newspaper article that talked about a depressed person who took mood control medication. The author of that article used this spelling and I knew I had to right the song. I sang it into a voicemail from vacation and then finished it up when I got home.

Lyrics

Blue genes, blue genes, hand me downs
Blue genes, blue genes, hand me downs

Mama gave me her legs
Mama gave me her eyes
Mama gave her shape
Mama gave me her rings
But when I’m down
Drowning in pity
That’s when I wish
That Mom had kept her blue genes

Mama hid it so well
No I never could tell
‘Til late one night
When mama caused a real scene
I was only a child
But even then I could see
That mama prayed
That she could dye her blue genes

Blue genes, make me pine away, cry all day
Live my life in misery, miss everything
Blue genes, that I wear all day, hide away
Keep my life in disarray
They’re haunting me
Blue genes, blue genes

Blue genes, blue genes, hand me downs
Blue genes, blue genes, hand me downs

Doctor said with a shrug
I’ll prescribe you a drug
Then when you’re feeling blue
You can take one or two
Now when I’m down
Wallowing in pity
I take my pills
And I patch my blue genes

Blue genes, blue genes, hand me downs
Blue genes, blue genes, hand me downs
