You Taught Me How to Die

This is about my father’s heroic battle with cancer.

Lyrics

Since the day you past away I’ve wondered
How you hung on for so long
So ravaged by the cancer
So dignified and strong
Guess you were giving one last lesson
Still showing right from wrong
Like you’d done since I was little
Like you’d showed me all along

I didn’t want you to go, I didn’t want you to stay
I didn’t want you to suffer, Didn’t want you to go on that way
To this day I remember, All the words that you said
I remember your eyes, As you were laying in bed
The week we said good-bye, You taught me how to die

You showed me all about forgiveness
Showed me how to finish strong
Showed me how to pick my battles
Showed me where a dad belongs
You live on through all your children
You live on through what we learned
From the way you stood up for us
From the respect you richly earned

I didn’t want you to go, I didn’t want you to stay
I didn’t want you to suffer, Didn’t want you to go on that way
To this day I remember, All the words that you said
I remember your eyes, As you were laying in bed
The week we said good-bye, You taught me how to die

Still adjusting to a life without you
Better for the things you helped me through
Not a day goes by without me thinking
Bout things I owe to you
In a way I feel you’re right here with me
In a way I feel you’re no where near
I now caress our precious memories
Hold the time we had so dear

I didn’t want you to go, I didn’t want you to stay
I didn’t want you to suffer, Didn’t want you to go on that way
To this day I remember, All the words that you said
I remember your eyes, As you were laying in bed
The week we said good-bye, You taught me how to die
